Nucor Steel Brandenburg – Plate Mill

CV Engineering acted as the Engineer of Record for Nucor Steel’s 1.6 million ton-per-year plate mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky. This 1,100-acre greenfield project was purpose-built to serve critical applications in infrastructure, energy, and defense.

Planning
The 2-million-square-foot mill complex required a fully integrated production layout. Planning included the conceptual design of water systems, site utilities, and medium-voltage power distribution to support a complex steelmaking and refining circuit.

Design & Construction
We engineered the foundations and structures for an AC electric arc furnace, slab caster, and a flexible rolling circuit featuring a roughing mill and Steckel mill. The scope included sheet piling, driven piling, process piping, and dedicated lines for both high- and low-temperature plate annealing.

Results
The facility successfully met Nucor’s stringent performance requirements, providing exceptional flexibility in producing a wide range of plate thicknesses and specifications. Our role as Engineer of Record ensured the complex facility met all applicable codes and standards.
