CV Engineering provided construction engineering for a new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Steel Melt Shop at US Steel’s Fairfield Works in Alabama. This brownfield project marked US Steel’s first-ever EAF installation.
Planning
The project required the careful integration of new infrastructure within an established, historically significant industrial environment. Our planning addressed unique logistical challenges to shift the facility toward modern electric steelmaking.
Design & Construction
The technical scope included a 180-ton AC electric arc furnace, a vacuum tank degasser, and a gas cleaning plant. We delivered the structural design for the mill building, foundations, a 161/35kV substation, and a STATCOM for power quality management.
Results
Despite the complexities of the brownfield site, the project successfully established a modern, efficient steelmaking platform. The execution demonstrated our ability to navigate the challenges of integrating new technology into existing operations safely and reliably.
